Milestones through the Centuries  
 
The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation ("Foundation") is well established with a history of one and a quarter centuries. Having witnessed changes over the centuries, we strive to pioneer and develop quality medical and health services based on the Love of Jesus, and the philosophy of serving with "compassionate love", with remarkable achievements.
 
 
1881
Nethersole Dispensary was set up in one of the rooms of the London Missionary Society's Tai Ping Shan Chapel
 
 
1885
The first Fundraising Campaign of Alice Memorial Hospital
1887
Alice Memorial Hospital established, introducing western medicine to local Chinese
 
Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese was established, pioneering local medical training. The committee members of the new medical school included Rev. Dr. J. Chalmers, Dr. Patrick Manson and Sir James Cantlie. Alice Memorial Hospital was the teaching hospital for the College
1893
Nethersole Hospital was opened
First hospital in Hong Kong providing nurses training
 
1904
Alice Memorial Maternity Hospital was opened
 
Provided midwives training in Hong Kong
 
1906
Ms. Ho Miu Ling, elder sister of Sir Kai Ho Kai, sponsored the construction of a new Hospital, bearing her name as "Ho Miu Ling Hospital" and located in Breezy Path

Introduced the diagnostic X-ray system in Asia
1921
In-taking male nurse trainees
 
1928
First hospital introducing antenatal check up and postnatal care for the mother and the baby, forerunner of effective maternity and child health service
1950s
Religious work in the wards was undertaken by a designated Biblewoman
 
 
 
1954
The new Maternity Hospital was opened
 
The three hospitals, located at the junction of Bonham Road and Breezy Path, were amalgamated to become the "Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital" which was incorporated by Ordinance under the name of "The Executive Committee of The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital"
1961
First hospital adopting the Uni Medical Record System in Hong Kong
 
 
1966
Providing volunteer-operated tuck shop service advocating the spirit of volunteerism
1970
Formal community nursing training took place in the Hospital
1973
Assisted in the commissioning of the United Christian Hospital ("UCH") in Kwun Tong, which put into practice "Hospital without walls" through the "Kwun Tong Community Health Project"
1974
The Nursing School at the Hospital moved to the UCH compound with an official name of The Nethersole School of Nursing, under UCH's management. It continued to attract the graduates to serve in both hospitals
 
1980s
Appointment of Chaplain to provide pastoral care to patients and their family members
 
1991
Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital became a member hospital of the Hospital Authority
 
1993
The Hospital at Bonham Road decanted to and assisted in the commissioning of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan
1997

The New Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital inaugurated in Tai Po, New Territories, promoting the design of an intelligent building with therapeutic healthscape

 

Established United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service (UCNCHS) with sister organization, United Christian Medical Service, advocating healthy lifestyle towards the goal of "Health for All"
Assisted in the establishment of the CWM/Nethersole Fund. Its object is to spread the knowledge of Christ and the spirit of sharing by subsidizing projects or services of evangelism, education, medical and health, and social service in Hong Kong and China
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) courses were introduced to train professional chaplains and committed volunteers
 
 
1999
CPE courses attaining international standard -- accredited by the supervisors of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education in USA and recognized as a role model for the Asia Pacific Region
 
Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Nursing Home in Kowloon Bay inaugurated, one of the new nursing homes pioneered by the Hong Kong Government, providing long-term medical and nursing care to the elderly
2000
Piloted the Home-based Rehabilitation Service in Tai Po providing outreaching rehabilitation (physio and occupational therapy) to the hospital discharged patients and the needy in the community. The Service was later renamed as "Nethersole Outreaching Rehabilitation Mission" (NORM)
 
 
 
The Hospital established Home Help Service with UCNCHS in Tai Po
2002

The Nethersole School of Nursing merged with the Department of Nursing of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in continuation of promoting nursing education and training

 
The Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education (NICHE) was established with the aim to propagate the mission of our organization, to bring holistic health to mankind through promoting the awareness of holistic health and pratice of holistic health care
 

Chaplaincy Service was restructured and renamed as "Nethersole Chaplaincy Ministries" in preparation for a more diversified and external service development

 
2003

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Elderly Care Home in Sau Mau Ping, Kwun Tong, a contracted home of the Social Welfare Department, was established to provide nursing and residential care to the needy elders. The service contract was completed in December 2008

2007
Managed the United Christian Nethersole Care Home owned by our sister organization, the United Christian Medical Service. This is a self-financed nursing home providing long-term and short-term residential care to the persons in need
2008
The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation Ordinance (Chapter 1181) was enacted. The organization continues and is committed to the provision of quality health care under the new corporate name of "Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation"
2012
